He told Sky Sports: "I thought it was a cracking game, a smashing game. We are a little disappointed with some of the goals we have conceded but it was a fantastic result for us.
"Villa are a top six or seven side. They have got some excellent players and they cause you some problems.
"Carew is a fantastic target man but then they have good pace and good ability around him, so they have all the armour to be a decent side - and they are - so it was a great result for us.
"I think one or two things have happened that happened last week and we have to make sure mentally more than anything else that we are switched on.
"We have to concentrate for 90 minutes or 94 minutes, but you have seen the spirit again today and we have to make sure this place is a fortress and the supporters have done that today."
He added: "They need to do it now for the rest of the season. They have to stick with us, and they have to be with us like when Aston Villa equalised.
"I thought Abdoulaye Faye was excellent, but even the ones who came on all played their part of it and that is what will get us through it."
