Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has paid tribute to Michael Owen after the striker announced his retirement.

Owen will hang up the boots at the end of the season.

"Michael has had a remarkable football career and has been a great player for England," Coates told The Sentinel.

"He has been a tremendous footballer and also conducted himself in a very professional way down the years.

"Football will miss him."
