Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists Jermain Defoe is a better bet for England than Manchester United's Michael Owen.
Owen put his name back in the World Cup frame with a hat-trick against Wolfsburg this week.
Redknapp said: "We have got (Wayne) Rooney and then it is competition for places after that. You've got big men with (Peter) Crouch, Carlton Cole and (Emile) Heskey. You have got sharp ones with Defoe, Owen and different options there for the manager to take.
"I think Rooney is the best all-round striker in the country, (but) Jermain's an out-and-out goalscorer, a fantastic goalscorer. He is in great form. I would certainly see him going to the World Cup, but I don't pick the squad.
"Two weeks ago, no-one would have considered Owen to go to the World Cup but he gets a hat-trick and now he has got to go.
"I love Michael Owen and think he is terrific, but players become great one week and bad players the next. It is amazing how people judge football and it varies so quickly from week to week and game to game."
