Sporting Kansas City's ex-Norwich striker Dwyer sets sights on USA team

Dom Dwyer is targeting a future call-up to the USA national team once he becomes a full citizen.

The 24-year old England-born Sporting Kansas City forward has been in the US since 2009 and received his green card in 2012 meaning he will be available for national team selection by 2017.

Dwyer had a breakthrough season in MLS in 2014, scoring 23 league goals including one in the play-off loss to New York Red Bulls, and one day hopes he can force his way into the US setup after beginning his career with Norwich City in his birth country of England.

"It's something I want to look forward to," said Dwyer after signing a new contract on Wednesday.

"It's something I'm very excited about, and I've heard little rumors here and there, little conversations with my agent that there's interest in the US camp. That would be amazing if my phone was to ever ring for that.

"Obviously, it's a good thing to be in the league for, and I also think the league's going places as well. It's a place to be."

On the new deal, which will keep Dwyer at Sporting Park for the foreseeable future, the club's co-MVP said: "I am ecstatic to commit my future to Kansas City.

"I want to thank the coaches and ownership for having faith in me. Also, a special thanks to the fans for all of their continued support. I am excited to get going again.

"Last year was a starting point for what is to come in the future, which is scoring a lot more goals, driving to win championships and enjoying myself on and off the field in a city with supporters to which I have grown to love and embrace."
