Southgate proud to take England U21 job

Gareth Southgate is being named new coach of England U21.

Former Middlesbrough boss Southgate, who has signed a three-year contract with the FA, emerged from a shortlist of nine English candidates for the post.

According to the job specifications, the role requires "a successful and consistent track record of high performance in a professional environment".

"I'm extremely excited about working with the best and brightest young players in the country," he said.

"I'm a proud Englishman and playing for my country was the pinnacle of my playing career. Since retiring as a player I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience of the game both here and abroad, and I'm eager to play my part in preparing players to compete at the highest level."
