Southgate explains reasons for omitting Swansea's Shelvey from England U21s

England U21 boss Gareth Southgate has explained his ideas behind leaving Jonjo Shelvey out of his squad for upcoming 2015 European Championship qualifiers.

The Young Lions take on San Marino in Serravalle on Thursday before hosting Lithuania at Portman Road on Tuesday but Swansea City midfielder Shelvey will not be present after Southgate decided to cast his eye on some other promising talent.

"I know enough about Jonjo, I wanted to look at some different players," said Southgate.

"There is a fair chance that, if we went to a tournament in two years' time, he might be involved at a more senior level.

"Also, he has had a lot of matches going back to pre-season, when Swansea were in Europe.

"With midfield and out wide, it is dangerous to say, but I have an embarrassment of riches, really."
