Southgate buoyed by England U21s triumph

Gareth Southgate's England U21 side produced a 3-1 victory over Wales in a 2015 European Championship qualifier on Monday night.

The Young Lions cruised past the Welsh at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea with Nathan Redmond netting a double and Saido Berahino getting a slight touch on the Norwich City winger's late strike.

The win placed England six points clear on top of the Group 1 qualifying table with a record of six victories and one draw and prompted words of praise from Southgate who felt his players put on an extremely positive display.

"I thought we were terrific with the ball. With our movement and pace, we created so many really good chances that, if I'm going to be critical, we probably should have been more ruthless," Southgate told Sky Sports.

"They are a fantastic group of players to work with and I thought there some outstanding performances, even if we didn't quite see the game out as we should have done.

"We want to make sure that we keep putting markers down and that we are a side that teams will fear, but the unknown is who we draw in the play-offs."
