Southampton want permanent deals for Chelsea's Bertrand, Atletico Madrid's Alderweireld

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman admits he would like to sign two of his defensive loanees on a permanent basis.

Ryan Bertrand is on a season-long loan from Chelsea and Toby Alderweireld is on a similar deal from Atletico Madrid but Koeman wants them to stay at St Mary's on a less temporary basis.

English left-back Bertrand has made 19 Premier League appearances this term while Belgium international Alderweireld has featured 15 times which has prompted Koeman to suggest the south coast outfit may make offers to them ahead of potential summer transfers.

"First of all, a good contract. And the players need to believe in the future of the club. I think both things we can do but it's always up to the player," said Koeman when asked what would land the pair permanently.

"If they are looking to bigger clubs, to play Champions League, we know sometimes that's the reason that we will lose players. We know that, we know our situation. We would like to grow and we would like to play Champions League but it's a long way [away].

"[They are] two good players, two young players - Ryan Bertrand now is playing every week, he missed that before. The same question is for Toby - he didn't play every weekend in Spain and now he is showing his qualities. We will see what happens but, of course, we would like to keep these two players."
