Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis has stated that being awarded the opportunity in the first team due to Fraser Forster's injury is not ideal.
Despite being club captain, Davis has been used as a backup keeper by the Saints over the past few seasons.
The 38-year old finally tasted his first piece of action during the current campaign as he replaced regular number one Forster during Southampton's 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday after the England international suffered a nasty knee injury.
Following the game, Davis admitted that he did not want his chance in the first team to arrive at the expense of Forster but stated that he can always be counted on whenever his beloved Southampton need him.
Davis said: "I felt it at the time when he was coming off the pitch. That's not how you want your opportunity to come. Stepping on to the pitch and hearing the fans was a special moment, really touching and really emotional. But you just think of the job in hand and I was just happy to contribute to the performance.
"When you are training and working day in and day out with a guy and a goalkeeper like Fraser, it's not difficult to be the No.2 at all. You know he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league so you accept your position and understand your role.
"Being at the club as long as I have, I'll carry on doing that supportive role as long as I can. That's the way I feel. It's comes to goalkeepers, where there's almost a different position. It suits well to older goalkeepers who understand the game, are willing to work hard during the week and are available when needed."
