Southampton's Pochettino to target Spanish La Liga players

New Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino says he will look to bring in players from Spain's Primera Division this winter.

The Argentine tactician has taken the reins at St Mary's after leaving Espanyol and has indicated that his knowledge of players in Spain's top flight will help him better identify what the club requires.

However, Pochettino was also quick to praise the level of quality coming through the Southampton academy in what he describes as an 'ambitious project'.

"What attracted me was the structure I was presented with when I spoke to the club," he said in an interview on Revista de la Liga.

"Also, I wanted to work with young players; Southampton has the youngest squad in the Premier League.

"I like the idea of developing young talent and working with the coaching staff at the formative level. It strikes me as an ambitious project, a project with a view to the future.

"Obviously, first of all we will be looking at the players coming through the academy, the young players who have grown up with English football at Southampton. Beyond that, Spain is obviously a market which I know better than any other and which is rich with talent."
