Southampton No2 Perez: England's academies better than Spanish

Southampton assistant manager Jose Perez rates England's academies superior to Spain's.

Perez, who arrived at St Mary's with manager Mauricio Pochettino just over a year ago, compared the academy at Southampton and the youth development system in England as a whole favourably with that of his native Spain.

"Here you have a greater structure of academies, a different level and more resources to help players come through," said Perez.

"In Spain obviously there are just two or three teams with big [enough] budgets to buy the facilities and pick the players.

"The history of this club is always of top, top players coming through and the academy is something special. We are not scared to put young players in the first team. We showed that at Espanyol and we try to do it here. It's easier when you have good players."
