Southampton midfielder Romeu: We gave everything at Liverpool

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu says they leave Liverpool with heads held high despite the 4-0 scoreline.'

Saints gave an excellent account of themselves in the first half against the Premier League leaders, who last dropped points at home in January 2019.

But chances came and went before the table-toppers regrouped at half time, and duly took control after the interval to run out 4-0 winners.

“There were periods where we were in front, we were pressing them well and having chance," Romeu reflected.

“To get something in this stadium you need to be one hundred per cent clinical and take those periods into your path, otherwise they can come back into the game at any moment.

“They are very fast up front, they use the spaces in behind very well, and that's what happened.

“When they scored the first goal, we tried to take more risks and left more spaces in behind to press better up front.

“The result by doing that is that either you get one goal, or they get a few more. Unfortunately, it happened the way we didn't want, but I think the team gave everything."
