Socceroos legend Aloisi honoured to land Brisbane Roar job

by Tim McGlone

Former Socceroos star John Aloisi says he is 'honoured' to have been appointed as the new head coach of A-League powerhouse Brisbane Roar.

Aloisi was unveiled as the Roar's new coach on Monday, with the appointment following Dutchman Franj Thijssen's spell as interim manager.

This will be Aloisi's second attempt at managing an A-League club after a stint with Melbourne Heart in 2012/13.

"I am extremely proud and honoured to join Brisbane Roar,'' Aloisi said upon leaving his role as development coach of A-League champions Melbourne Victory.

"The club has defined success in the first 10 years of the Hyundai A-League and I am determined to ensure the high standards the Roar players, members, sponsors and supporters have come to expect continue under my stewardship."

Aloisi is one of Australia's most decorated footballers, having played in all three of Europe's flagship competitions; the English Premier League, Spain's La Liga, and Italy's Serie A.

However, Aloisi is most famous for scoring the decisive penalty against Uruguay that sent Australia to the 2006 World Cup.

Aloisi will also be in charge of all football operations at the Roar.
