Smith admits Portsmouth need to convert chances

Portsmouth new-boy Tommy Smith admits it is time to start converting the chances which have gone begging recently.

Pompey trail West Ham by two points, with Gianfranco Zola's team hosting Arsenal tomorrow.

Fratton Park's former Watford striker said: "We can't allow the gap at the bottom to get any bigger.

"If it gets to seven or eight points, you're cut adrift and left with a huge mountain to climb. I was at Watford when we went down four seasons ago and it is hard to stay positive when everyone expects you to lose every week.

"We can't afford to wait until the transfer market opens in January. Things have to change quickly and we would take an ugly win at Hull."
