Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel admits he congratulated some of his old teammates after their league triumph.

Skrtel never managed to win the league with the Reds, but he was proud to see some stars he played with lifting the trophy this season.

The Slovakian also had a good season, winning the Turkish league with Basakeshir, as they finished ahead of established giants such as Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.

Skrtel told Demiroren News Agency, per Inside Futbol: "I was very happy that Liverpool were crowned champions. I congratulated the coaches and players over the phone.

"It was more difficult for Basaksehir to win the league. Liverpool were announced as champions [seven] weeks ago, whereas we claimed the title in the final weeks.

"It was a well-deserved success in the end. We were the most consistent team in the league."
