Skoko-Srhoj partnership starting to take shape at Melbourne Heart

Melbourne Heart midfielder Josip Skoko is of firm belief that his midfield partnership with Wayne Srhoj is really starting to come through.

The experienced pair were unable to take the field together in the early stages of the season but in the past five matches have teamed up to help the first-year club go undefeated in that timeframe.

Skoko says it is mainly due to the fact that he and Srhoj play a similar style which makes it easy to understand when on the pitch.

"At the start, Wayne was coming back from injury and I wasn't fit so we both weren't fit and then I got injured so I didn't play," the former Wigna Athletic and Hajduk Split man said.

"It took about six weeks to get us out there together then obviously we've had four or five games together and the understanding is good, it's just been getting better and better.

"We play a similar type of football so we like to pass the ball and I think we complement each other really well and when you think about the game the same way, the understanding becomes even better and a lot quicker, it's developed nicely."

Tomorrow night, the Heart take on North Queensland Fury in Townsville, which will be their third match on the road in a row following their 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets in Port Macquarie and the 0-0 draw in Perth last week.

Skoko says the travel hasn't been too bad and praised the club for the way they have dealt with a demanding schedule.

"The travel hasn't been too bad. It's been hectic, we've put a lot of ks (kilometers) between us and this place (Melbourne) but I think its full credit to the club and the way we've been organized. The way we've handled it has been really good, the boys got on with it and we got a couple of results and hopefully another one coming," he added.

And the ex-Socceroos star also commented on the progress the Heart have made in the past two months after a slow start on their debut A-League season.

"We can only get better I think. The first six or eight weeks of the season, we're not going to repeat that again and that gives us confidence saying 'we are only going to get better' and we haven't gotten better all of a sudden. We've taken slow steps and hopefully we can just keep improving as we go and hopefully we can peak at the right time and get into the finals and have a good run there," he concluded.
