Shilton cannot see Man City keeper Hart starting for England

England legend Peter Shilton doesn't believe anything should be read into Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart's selection for yesterday's friendly against Platinum Stars.

Despite boasting the number one jersey, David James' hopes seem to have been dashed by a minor knee injury as he failed to feature at all in the 3-0 victory.

Hart got the nod to start in a strong back five made up of Ashley Cole, John Terry, Ledley King and Glen Johnson, with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in midfield.

Robert Green also got 45 minutes, joining Wayne Rooney and eight others in coming on at half-time.

But Shilton, England's most capped player with 125 appearances, said: "There's very little to choose between all three and it wouldn't surprise me if any of them were put in first, even Joe Hart because of the way he's come through and looked confident.

"I know I was nearly 41 when I played in Italia 90 and I played on for another 18 months in what is now the Premier League.

"But I just think he (David James) isn't getting any younger, not every goalkeeper is the same. He's 39.

"I just feel Rob Green is getting better, he has been consistent, he has actually played well for England recently and he hasn't fallen apart for West Ham in a season when they've really struggled.

"He's still got a bit to learn in certain areas - I'd still like to see him be a bit more commanding, but he has improved."
