Alan Shearer says Tottenham Hotspur can now show if they are genuine title contenders.

Spurs have gone within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea who were beaten 2-0 at Manchester United on Sunday.

According to England legend Shearer, Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs now have a fantastic opportunity to reel in Antonio Conte's Blues even if the West Londoners could refocus following their defeat.

“Now we will see what Spurs are really made of," Shearer wrote in his column for The Sun.

“Yes they are on a fantastic run and Saturday's 4-0 thumping of Bournemouth made it a club record 12 successive Premier League wins at home.

“This is some way to say goodbye to White Hart Lane.

“Mauricio Pochettino has seen his side win seven on the bounce home and away in the league, too.

“But that will have to extend to 13 if they are to win the league.

“Yes, the gap on Chelsea is now back to four points. But look at the two clubs' run-ins and Spurs are still going to need to win every league game from now until the end of the season.

“Even that may not be enough — but at least there is a real title race on now.

“The narrow nature of this gap should now refocus Chelsea.

“But you never know. At least we have a battle on now."
