Scottish Football Association chief executive Gordon Smith hopes to revive the England v Scotland fixture in the future.
However, Smith is optimistic the fixture can be revived.
"I know the guys in the FA pretty well and Brian (Barwick, chief executive) came back and said 'OK, let's do it' but there was a problem regarding the players' availability - which was such a shame," he told talkSPORT.
"I said 'Can we consider this to be a postponement rather than a cancellation?'
"We are going to sit down again and look for possible dates. The difficulty is fitting in dates with World Cup [qualifying] fixtures.
"We have definitely got out mindset to sit down again and go through it and revive the game."
