Scotland's Euro 2012 hopes ended with a 3-1 loss to World champions Spain at the Estadio Jose Rico Perez. Scots boss Craig Levein believes his side have shown plenty of promise for the future, even if on the night they were outclassed.
"The result is disappointing," he said. "We don't like to lose, but I told the players that this is as hard as it gets.
"To come to the home of the world and European champions in their backyard is difficult for anyone.
"They played close to maximum tonight, but I give our players enormous credit for the way they stuck at it and made chances.
"I don't feel we hit our stride until three or four games into qualifying, so I'd have liked more games before the start, but we're improving enormously, including tonight.
"It's greatly encouraging and I feel we're going places."
