Schalke have dropped their interest in Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

Schalke admitted they were unable to agree terms on a move with the player.

"If we had really wanted to have him, then we would have got him," said club chief Clemens Tonnies.

"But it didn't make any sense because we were miles apart."
