Schalke defender Benedikt Höwedes on Arsenal radar

Schalke defender Benedikt Höwedes is interesting Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. The Telegraph says with Thomas Vermaelen sold to Barcelona for £15 million, Arsenal's senior centre-back cover consists of Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal, two players who have spent most of their careers at full-back.

Höwedes was one of only three players to feature in every minute of Germany's victorious World Cup campaign in Brazil. He was deployed as a left-back but has spent most of his career at centre-back and would certainly add authority to the Arsenal squad.

There would be some doubts, however, about his pace and also whether he would want to give up the captaincy at Schalke and risk being only a squad player at Arsenal.
