Schalke coach Roberto di Matteo is chasing West Bromwich Albion midfielder James Morrison.
The Daily Star Sunday says Di Matteo, in charge of the Scotland star for 18 months at The Hawthorns before being sacked in February 2011, is poised to test new Baggies boss Tony Pulis with a £4million bid.
Darlington-born Morrison, 28, has been a huge success since moving from Middlesbrough in August 2007 in a £2m deal.
Championship promotion-chasers Boro will get 15 per cent of any sell-on fee.
