AS Roma are eyeing former Tottenham fullback Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

The defender has been without a club since he was released by Tottenham last month.

However, the Cameroon defender was in Italy on Monday night for Roma's 1-1 draw with Juventus.

Under Italian transfer rules, Assou-Ekotto cannot sign for Roma this season even though he is a free agent, says the London Evening Standard.

But it is thought the Cameroon international would be permitted to train with the club ahead of a possible deal in the summer.
