Roma chief Tiago Pinto says they're eager to secure Chris Smalling to a new deal.

The defender's contract is due to expire in June.

Pinto said, “Smalling starts today, you will see how important he is for this team. Both us and the player want to continue together."

The Portuguese also says Rick Karsdorp has left the squad.

He added, “We are working with his entourage to find a solution that can make both parties happy."
