Richard Hughes named new sporting director of Liverpool

Richard Hughes has been named new sporting director of Liverpool.

Hughes takes the job after leaving Bournemouth last week. He will begin his duties at Anfield on June 1.

"I am incredibly proud to have this opportunity. Liverpool FC is a unique club and I am grateful to be given a chance to serve it in this capacity," said Hughes.

"People rightly talk about the rich history that this organization can boast, but it is the present and the future that really excites me. Jürgen Klopp leads an outstanding team and squad and on top of that the commitment to young players and their path to the first team is also outstanding.

Hughes thus replaces Jörg Schmadtke - who left after the January window.

"I am fully aware of the expectations and the responsibility that comes with taking this position," he added. "It will be my job to work with Michael (Edwards) and lead the football team that is already in place, plus the wider staff at the AXA Training Centre, to make good decisions."
