Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney reportedly apologised to Preston players for diving to win a penalty in Monday night's FA Cup win. Rooney went down in the box to win the penalty after Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann rushed off his line to challenge him. Replays showed there was no contact between the Preston stopper and Rooney.
A Preston insider confirmed last night to the Mirror: "At the end of the game, Rooney went over to Thorsten and said, 'Sorry, but I saw you coming and I had to get out of the way'."
Preston boss Simon Grayson went no further than branding the penalty decision "contentious" and the Lilywhites are happy to let the matter rest.
