Lionel Messi was against Barcelona signing Los Angeles FC striker Carlos Vela in January, it has been revealed.

The former Real Sociedad striker was linked with Barca during the winter market as they sought cover for injured pair Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele.

Ultimately, the Mexico international remained with LAFC, however El Confidencial says his arrival was always unlikely due to Messi's opinion.

The Barca captain was dead against Vela's arrival as he wanted to keep things clear for PSG star Neymar. Messi felt Vela's arrival would be an act of overload, with both he and Neymar playing in a similar position.

Messi has made it clear to Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu he expects Neymar's arrival this summer.
