Manchester United made a firm bid for Atletico Madrid defender Joao Miranda last summer.
AS reports United made a bid for Miranda after Louis van Gaal was appointed United boss.
That move failed but the Dutchman still knows he needs to strengthen the defence.
Miranda has a £22.5m release clause in his current contract.
