Landon Donovan has described the send-off he received on Friday night as something beyond his wildest dreams.
The 32-year old played his final international match for his country in the 1-1 friendly draw with Ecuador in front of more than 36,000 fans at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Donovan has retired from international football after a 157-game career which yielded a national record of 57 goals and 58 assists including three World Cups and four US Soccer Athlete of the Year awards.
In the wake of his final appearance for the USA, the LA Galaxy star spoke of his admiration for the American public who sent him off with a superb ovation.
"It was beyond my wildest dreams for sure," he said.
"As a human being, to feel that kind of love and support is incredible.
"I've put a lot into this game over many years and tonight feels like it was all worth it. I'm very grateful."
Donovan, the USA's most decorated player, added: "My life has been shaped through this sport.
"I'm so blessed because I've been able to grow and learn with all the experiences that this sport has given me."
