Result not performance disappoints Southampton midfielder Davis

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has hailed his side following their 2-2 draw against Newcastle United.

The Saints claimed their first points of the season with an entertaining draw with the Magpies at St. James' Park on Sunday despite scoring first through Graziano Pelle before falling behind only for Shane Long to grab a late equaliser.

Davis was encouraged by his side's display and stated that the performance merited more than just a share of the spoils.

He told the Daily Echo: "Overall, probably a little bit disappointed, because I think we finished the game the stronger of the two teams, but, at the same time, obviously, they've come from a goal behind in the second half. To show that sort of fighting spirit, determination to stick at it and keep going, you can look at it two ways really.

"A little bit frustrated in the first half, we were obviously a little poor in possession and that's a little bit unlike us, but, at the same time, over the course of the game I think we probably had the better chances."
