Redknapp must convince QPR chairman Fernandes about Defoe gamble

QPR boss Harry Redknapp faces a battle finding the funds to sign Toronto FC striker Jermain Defoe.

The Telegraph says Defoe is keen to scrap his deal with FC Toronto after an unhappy 10 months and return to the Premier League, with Redknapp identifying him as a priority signing.

But Redknapp will have to convince chairman Tony Fernandes to put together an attractive package for Defoe before pressing ahead with a deal.

Toronto will demand a transfer fee for Defoe while QPR will have to offer the England international attractive wages, with their move also complicated by potential interest from Leicester City.

Fernandes is also reluctant to pay huge wages to players in their thirties after expressing concerns over the summer signing of Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer.
