Redknapp: Man Utd taking more confidence into 'fierce rivalry' with Liverpool

Jamie Redknapp believes Manchester United is holding a lot more confidence than his former club Liverpool going into this wekeend's meeting between the two clubs.

The Reds find themselves sitting ninth on the Premier League table following last weekend's 0-0 draw with Sunderland while their old enemies United are up to third on the back of five-straight wins.

The pair face-off at Old Trafford on Sunday and ex-Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is of the belief that the home side will be expecting to get a positive result over Brendan Rodgers' men who were eliminated from the Champions League during the week.

'United go into the match with a lot more confidence than Liverpool, though, that's for sure,' Redknapp wrote in his pre-match analysis for Sky Sports.

'Going to Old Trafford - after being knocked out of the Champions League by Basel - is the last fixture Brendan Rodgers wants at the moment.

'There's a huge amount of scrutiny on him, his team and his signings and if he loses this one the intensity goes up a couple of notches.

'It's time for some of new signings to stand up and be counted because they've not performed.

'Liverpool are struggling for form but you can't put a price on confidence.

'Rodgers has a lot of patching-up to do.'

In this fixture last season, Liverpool defeated United 3-0 thanks to a double from Steven Gerrard (both from the penalty spot) and a goal from Luis Suarez who departed the club for Barcelona in the summer.
