Steven Gerrard has apologised to Liverpool supporters for his undeniable red card on Sunday.
The Reds skipper was sent off less than a minute after making his way onto the Anfield pitch in his side's 2-1 loss to Manchester United.
Gerrard produced a rash challenge on Juan Mata just moments before he tread heavily on Ander Herrera which prompted referee Martin Atkinson to brandish a deserved red.
The veteran midfielder spoke to Sky Sports after the match to offer his admission of guilt for being sent off and to say sorry to both his teammates and the loyal Liverpool fans.
"I need to accept it, the decision was right. I've let down my team-mates and the supporters. I take full responsibility," he said.
"I've been in the game long enough when you do something like that. I take full responsibility.
"I don't know what caused it. I don't know. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle. I shouldn't say more about it really, I've just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters."
