Real Salt Lake have confirmed that Alvaro Saborio has broken a bone in his foot which will force him to miss the World Cup.
The Costa Rica striker sustained the injury at national team training on Thursday and will now be sidelined for up to four months.
Saborio was set to be an integral part of the Ticos line-up in their Group D campaign against Uruguay, England and Italy but will now be forced out of the FIFA tournament which kicks off next month in Brazil.
"Our doctors are conferring with the Costa Rican federation's (doctors)," said Trey Fitz-Gerald, RSL vice president of broadcasting and communications.
"We have seen X-rays, but discussions on course of treatment are ongoing, so timetable is yet to be determined."
