Reading director of football Nick Hammond says he was sorry to see Brian McDermott sacked.

Hammond revealed that it was tough to see his best mate leave after guiding the club into the top flight.

He told the Reading Post: "My relationship with Brian was a long standing one, and we're still close.

"The process is the process and that's the job that I do. I'm absolutely delighted where we've ended up. Nigel's a perfect fit for this football club.

"He brings an honesty and an integrity. It's a new era, and I'm looking forward to working with him."
