Reading boss Steve Clarke has revealed how close Chelsea came to signing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Clarke was assistant manager at Chelsea in 2005 when they moved for Gerrard.
"There was a stage when Chelsea thought they had him signed," he told talkSPORT. "At the time we thought it was a done deal. He decided to stay at Liverpool and obviously he's had a fantastic career.
"He was great last night and has been a fantastic servant for Liverpool and is probably leaving the Premier League a little bit early."
