Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson is understood to be a target for Rangers, says the Sunday Times.
Speaking after the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, Rangers boss Walter Smith stated that he is desperate to add a creative midfielder to his squad.
"Someone who can bring us a benefit middle to front - that's what we need," he said.
"I think we have a number of forwards who can finish, it is getting someone who can do something a little bit different in terms of creation that would help."
Johnson, 21, admitted last week that he would be willing to leave the Riverside if he does not get a run in the first team.
