Preston say they will wait until after the match at Rochdale on 2 January before naming Phil Brown's successor.
Chairman Peter Ridsdale told a BBC Radio Lancashire fans' forum:
"During that week we expect to say what will happen for the rest of the season, whether that be a current internal solution or an external solution."
Caretaker bosses David Unsworth and Graham Alexander were in charge for Saturday's 1-0 victory at MK Dons and look set to be given at least three more games.
"Having made the change, we've got two very enthusiastic members of our current first-team make-up, who are in jobs that on Saturday had a very good start," added Ridsdale. "We're hoping that start will be built on." "We'll announce our arrangements by the time of the two-week enforced break.
