Premiership interest growing for Celtic striker McDonald

Premiership interest is growing for Celtic striker Scott McDonald, with Portsmouth expected to move for the Australia international this month. Pompey boss Tony Adams has had scouts posted at Parkhead throughout December and January to run the rule over Hoops midfielder Scott Brown, but he has also received glowing reports on McDonald, who could move to Fratton Park as a direct replacement for new Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

McDonald has friends on the south coast thanks to his time as a trainee with Southampton and his impressive link-up play, along with his prolific record since moving to Celtic, is attractive to Adams.

Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers are also among top-flight clubs to post scouts to watch McDonald this season, while Espanyol sports director Paco Herrera is also a fan.

Should Celtic indicate a willingness to sell, Pompey cannot expect to clear run at McDonald after convincing top-flight managers with his big-match performances in the Champions League and Old Firm games.
