PREMIER LEAGUE WRAP: Chelsea cruise with Costa hat-trick as Arsenal and Man City play out thriller

Diego Costa continued his brilliant start to life in the English Premier League by netting a hat-trick for Chelsea on Saturday.

The Brazilian-born Spanish striker, who joined the Blues from Atletico Madrid for £32million this summer, took his tally to seven goals in four matches when netting three times in his new club's 4-2 triumph over Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

After falling behind in the 11th minute due to a John Terry own-goal, Chelsea struck back through Costa who became the first Blues player since Jack Meredith in 1928 to score in his first four outings when he slotted home a neat pass from fellow new boy Cesc Fabregas on the stroke of half-time.

Costa added a second in the 56th minute when he was again fed by Fabregas before completing his treble just over 10 minutes later when pouncing on a skewed Ramires effort.

Another new Blues signing, Loic Remy, was introduced to the Blues faithful in the 72nd minute when replacing Costa and he wasted no time in endearing himself to the west London supporters when firing home after receiving a pass from Oscar.

There was time for one more goal and it came in the way of a clinical Wilfried Bony through ball and Jonjo Shelvey finish as the Swans grabbed a late consolation prize.

The win has Jose Mourinho's men sitting pretty at the top of the league table with a maximum 12 points from four matches as Garry Monk's Swansea dropped to third with their first defeat of the campaign.

Earlier in the day in north London, Arsenal and Manchester City played out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium in a game full of ebbs and flows.

City took the lead against the run of play in the 28th minute when Sergio Aguero swiftly finished a pinpoint pass from Jesus Navas before the Gunners struck back in fine fashion when Jack Wilshere chipped deftly over Joe Hart with his non-preferred right foot in the 63rd minute.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal then hit the front 11 minutes later when summer signing Alexis Sanchez struck with a sublime side-footed volley from a Wilshere header before Martin Demichelis found himself unmarked in the box to head home Aleksandar Kolarov's 83rd-minute corner to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

In other matches in the Premier League on Saturday, Southampton handed down a crushing 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St Mary's which saw new recruit Graziano Pelle score twice inside 20 minutes before Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin completed the rout in the second half.

Newcastle's second defeat of the season sees them fall to the bottom of the table and has heaped plenty of pressure on manager, and former Saints boss, Alan Pardew while Ronald Koeman has enjoyed a bright start to life on the south coast with two wins and a draw from their four outings.

At the Britannia Stadium, Leicester City's record signing Leonardo Ulloa helped himself to his third goal of the campaign to give the Foxes a 1-0 win over Stoke City to open their account in their return to the top flight.

Everton notched their first victory of the new term by defeating West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at The Hawthorns courtesy of a classy second-minute curler from £28million signing - and former Baggies loanee - Romelu Lukaku before Kevin Mirallas added a second in the 66th minute when his tame effort calamitously dribbled past Albion keeper Ben Foster.

in the north east, Sunderland recorded their third draw of the season by holding Tottenham to a 2-2 result at the Stadium of Light after early goals from both teams.

Nacer Chadli gave Spurs a second-minute lead before Adam Johnson responded two minutes later for the Black Cats prior to Christian Eriksen's strike three minutes into the second half.

But Mauricio Pochettino was denied a third win of the season when Harry Kane turned in Jordi Gomez's 82nd-minute cross into his own net, handing Sunderland a third draw in four games.

Crystal Palace and Burnley played out a 0-0 stalemate at Selhurst Park but not before Eagles gloveman Julian Speroni denied Scott Arfield from the penalty spot late in the game.

And to round off Saturday's fixtures, Aston Villa moved to second spot with a narrow 1-0 triumph over Liverpool at Anfield thanks to Gabby Agbonlahor's ninth-minute effort which came from a Philippe Senderos header off a corner.

Sunday's only fixture sees the winless Manchester United host QPR while Monday night football has West Ham United heading to Hull City with both sides in search of their second victory of the 2014/15 edition of England's premier competition.
