PREMIER LEAGUE: Stoke slam four past hapless Newcastle

Stoke City have produced a masterclass display to dispose of Newcastle United 4-0 this afternoon.

The Potters netted just before the half-hour mark through Jonathan Walters before Jermaine Pennant, Danny Higginbotham and Ricardo Fuller all added to the tally in the second half.

The win was the club's first in five outings and their second over the Magpies this season, following their 2-1 victory at St James' Park in September.

Stoke moved up to 10th on the table as Newcastle dropped to 11th with their second loss on the trot.

Stoke City: 4 (Jonathan Walters 28', Jermaine Pennant 47', Danny Higginbotham 49', Ricardo Fuller 90+1') Newcastle United: 0

Venue: Britannia Stadium, Stoke-on-Trent Crowd: 25,000 Referee: Lee Mason Yellow cards:SC - Matthew Etherington 45+2' NU - Cheik Tiote 42'

The beginning of this match did not produce much in the way of goalscoring chances as the two sides canceled each other out until Stoke took the lead just before the half-hour mark.

GOALJonathan Walters got away from Newcastle defender Sol Campbell and managed to head home at the near post from a Jermaine Pennant cross to send the home side ahead in the 28th minute.

Newcastle worked their way into the contest after the goal but were finding it difficult to break down the Stoke defence, led by skipper Ryan Shawcross, as the Potters took a lead into the half-time break.

GOAL Immediately after the re-start, Stoke got a second goal through Jermaine Pennant. The winger was in the right place at the right time to tap home with ease after the Magpies defence made a meal of goalkeeper Steve Harper's poor clearance.

GOAL Less than two minutes later, the Potters went three ahead when Danny Higginbotham beat Harper with a sizzling free-kick through the wall to essentially wrap up proceedings before the 50-minute mark unless the visitors can produce another Arsenal-like comeback.

The Magpies were desperate to get at least one goal back and started attacking with a more menacing sense but their need for a goal only went against them as Stoke grabbed a fourth in injury time.

GOAL Substitute Ricardo Fuller was the man who got the fourth for the Potters after goalkeeper Asmir Begovic punted forward for Walters to flick on with the Jamaican slotting home past Harper to close out the rout.
