West Ham United moved up to fifth position on the Premier League table thanks to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday night.
A brace from Dimitri Payet allowed Slaven Bilic's side to secure their third win in five matches, which has them just a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, as Steve McClaren's Magpies dropped to the foot of the standings after a winless beginning.
The opening goal came inside 10 minutes when summer signing Payet produced a curling effort from Mark Noble's lay-off.
Then the East Londoners were 2-0 up at home three minutes into the second half when former Marseille ace Payet was on hand to fire home into an empty net after debutant Victor Moses's full-pitch run after a Newcastle resulted in his effort cannoning off the woodwork and into the path of the waiting Frenchman.
Newcastle struggled to create chances in their fourth straight league outing without a goal and now find themselves propping up the remaining 19 top flight clubs having started dismally under McClaren.
