PREMIER LEAGUE: Man City overcome tardy start to fire past Liverpool

Title-holders Manchester City have defeated Liverpool 3-1 in the Premier League's Monday night football at the Etihad Stadium.

Last season's Premier League champions overcame a slow start to comfortably beat the Reds thanks to a double from Stevan Jovetic and a quick finish from Sergio Aguero just moments after coming on.

Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool side started well at Eastlands, creating early chances, but they found themselves a goal behind when the impressive Jovetic snuck in on new Reds signing Alberto Moreno before firing through the legs of Simon Mignolet.

Samir Nasri had chipped the ball into the area only for Moreno's fellow summer arrival Dejan Lovren to produce a poor clearing header which allowed Jovetic to nick in and then hammer home from just outside the six-yard box.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Montenegrin striker added a second when he finished a brilliant team move from City which commenced with him flicking a clever backheel through to Nasri and ended in him firing home unmarked with his left foot.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, City were three ahead when substitute Aguero received a neat ball from Jesus Navas before slotting home inside Mignolet's near post within a matter of seconds of replacing Edin Dzeko.

By this stage it was all academic but Liverpool did manage to pull one back with seven minutes remaining when substitute Rickie Lambert saw his initial effort from Daniel Sturridge's quality ball saved by Joe Hart only to deflect in off Pablo Zabaleta's knee.

However, it was not enough time for the Reds to produce a stunning comeback as Manuel Pellegrini's City joined Tottenham, Chelsea and Swansea City on two wins from two outings.

City will now prepare for Saturday's visit from Stoke City while Liverpool will look to bounce back when they head to Spurs on Sunday.
