Poyet sets sights on creating Sunderland legacy with FA Cup triumph

Gus Poyet is eager to lift at least one piece of silverware during his tenure as Sunderland manager.

The Black Cats were so close to holding aloft the 2013/14 Capital One Cup after leading Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley in March this year but were beaten 3-1 by the eventual Premier League champions.

Ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third round meeting with Leeds United, Poyet says he is hoping to achieve success with the north east club who last lifted a trophy when beating the Whites in the 1973 cup final.

"That was one of the situations that I didn't enjoy last year when we had the chance to do something special at Wembley and we were so close, but we didn't do it," said the Uruguayan.

"You always try to be the last one to lift a trophy at a place where you have been, so that's why the FA Cup is important for us.

"I always think about winning, so when you get the chance to go to a new club and you see the possibility, of course you start learning about the history and things that they have been doing, or not.

"To go to the last trophy, you need to go there, so it wasn't too difficult to find it! Then, of course, how special was that win?

"You always wait for things to happen and then after that, it will always be a special situation between two teams who have played a final.

"It was a long time ago and how many supporters are going to be in the stadium who were at that final? I don't think too many, but of course people will talk about it."
