Portland Timbers captain Johnson has surgery on broken leg

Portland Timbers have confirmed that Will Johnson has undergone surgery on his broken right leg.

The 27-year old midfielder suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in a tackle involving Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom in the opening seconds of the weekend's clash at BMO Field.

The Timbers captain, who joined from Real Salt Lake at the beginning of last season, will now be sidelined for around six months.

Johnson was stretchered off after the collision before his side took a two-goal lead when Fanendo Adi scored prior to a Steven Caldwell own-goal in the 16th minute.

However, the day only got worse for Portland as a second-half Nick Hagglund brace and a late Michael Bradley goal gave Toronto a 3-2 win.

After the match, Johnson's good friend Bradley spoke of the heavy collision which left the Canadian international in an immense amount of pain.

"As a player and as a competitor, you hate to see anybody get hurt," said Bradley.

"But that's one of [my] closest friends; it's not nice at all.

"They both went in very hard. On the one hand you expect that they would both pop right up, and on the other hand that play had a hard edge going to it. You could even hear the way they crashed into each other and you kind of knew that that was a hard one."
