PM Cameron apologises for West Ham-Aston Villa gaffe

Self-confessed Aston Villa supporter David Cameron has apologised for his blunder in which he mixed up the West Midlands club with West Ham United.

The British Prime Minister said sorry for his gaffe after appealing to voters to support West Ham during a speech.

But in an interview with the Birmingham Mail, Cameron said he made a mistake because he was thinking of the West Indies cricket team at the time of talking.

"I want to say how sorry I am," said Cameron.

"All I can explain is I went past the West Ham stadium the day before and I just said the word West Indies in my speech and I was making a point about the cricket Test and all the rest of it.

"I meant to say Aston Villa and I am profoundly embarrassed." In the original speech the PM described Britain as a place, 'where you can support Man United, the Windies and Team GB at the same time. 'Of course, I'd rather you supported West Ham.'
