PLAY IT SHORT: Cech to Liverpool; Blackett's Man Utd pay-hike; Jol finds English Messi; Sturridge no Diego Costa

CECH TO LIVERPOOL MAKES SENSEPetr Cech to Liverpool? Brendan Rodgers should ask the question. Would Jose Mourinho really block such a loyal servant from moving to a club of his choice? Frank Lampard and Chelsea have handled his surprise move to Manchester City in top class fashion. You'd fancy the same if Liverpool came in for Cech. He's the same age as Victor Valdes, fully fit and desperate for first team football. He'd solve a lot of problems at the back for Rodgers, who should ask the question. And after ten years with Chelsea, you can't see Mourinho nor Roman Abramovich blocking him from moving north in January.

FULHAM HAVE THE ENGLISH MESSIWow! Believe the hype. Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United would all love to take Patrick Roberts off the hands of crisis club Fulham. And listening to former Cottagers boss Martin Jol on Saturday, it can't be any surprise. The Dutchman, speaking with talkSPORT, volunteered that Roberts "could be the English Lionel Messi'. Some claim! But coming from Jol, not one for hyperbole, it's worth noting.

LENNON STILL A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PLAYERHas Aaron Lennon's star really tumbled so much? It's emerged Tottenham are listening to offers for Lennon ahead of the January market. It was only last season there was genuine talk of a move to Italy where Inter Milan and AS Roma were keen. He may've fallen behind the likes of Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli at Spurs, but Lennon, at 27, is still a top class talent with his best years ahead of him. If he is available in the winter transfer window, moving to a Champions League club surely is a real option for the England international. Certainly, he is capable of much more than taking a meal ticket to Al Ahli.

BLACKETT'S MASSIVE PAY-HIKEToo soon for Tyler Blackett? Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has given the green light to hand the 20 year-old defender a new deal. And the talk is Blackett will see his wages jump from £2,000-a-week to £50,000-a-week! It was only last season Blackett was struggling to get a game with Birmingham City, now, after six United appearances, he's being offered terms greater than what Raheem Sterling is earning at Liverpool. Good luck to the lad. But what does this do to Blackett's development? Does the incentive remain to get the most out of his ability when you're made an instant millionaire? How does Van Gaal justify such a decision?

STURRIDGE NO DIEGO COSTAIt's been too easy to attack Roy Hodgson over England's omission of Daniel Sturridge. The criticism eased after Sturridge was missing for Liverpool's win over West Bromwich Albion, but it was always wide of the mark. Sturridge deserved greater scrutiny, especially when you compare him with Chelsea striker Diego Costa. Is Jose Mourinho really a shrinking violet compared with Brendan Rodgers? Of course not. But there was no stopping Diego Costa, troubling hamstring and all, from turning out for Spain - twice - this week. There'll be plenty to defend Sturridge and Rodgers for their stand, but it's about the individual. Diego Costa wants to play and won't let anyone, even the Special One, deny him. If Sturridge wanted to be part of England's squad this week, he'd be involved. It's as simple as that.

ANOTHER WEEK OF RIO IGNORING QPRYou have to feel for QPR fans. Bottom of the league for the international break, they've had to put up with another week of rent-a-quote Rio Ferdinand. Every day, the former Manchester United defender has been in media talking. But it's not about QPR. There's been no rallying of the fans. No positive words about turning things around. Oh no. It's been anything and everything BUT the Rs. HIS management hopes. HIS favourite United players. HIS view on England. But nothing for QPR. Harry Redknapp, who's been comparing Ferdinand with Franz Beckenbauer and tipping him for the UEFA presidency, hasn't helped matters promoting his own book this week. In the meantime, Clint Hill and Richard Dunne remain on the outside looking in...

REDKNAPP, RIO AND DOUBLE STANDARDSIt was a good response from Harry Redknapp to Roy Keane's criticism on the weekend. The Aston Villa coach had mocked Redknapp's approach to management, claiming the QPR boss was 'too cosy' with his players. Redknapp, quite rightly, pointed out Keane had never played for him and so had little idea about how he handled his squad. So you just wonder how Harry takes Rio Ferdinand's constant sniping of England coach Roy Hodgson. Hodgson put Ferdinand back in his box last week, just like Redknapp, making clear he'd never worked with the player. Can we expect Redknapp to highlight Ferdinand's unjust comments in his next column for The Sun?
