PEC coach Stegeman: Why Weghorst could handle Arsenal - and even Bayern Munich

PEC Zwolle coach John Stegeman believes VfL Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst could handle a move to Arsenal - or even higher.

Weghorst has been linked with the Gunners after an impressive season in the Bundesliga and was asked about the Arsenal speculation just last week. Newcastle United have also been linked with the centre-forward, who has a deal with VfL to 2023.

The 27 year-old joined Wolfsburg two years ago from AZ Alkmaar. Before then, Weghorst played with FC Emmen and Heracles. He boasts four caps with Holland's national team.

And his steady progress has continued this past season, with Weghorst hitting an impressive 16 goals in 32 Bundesliga games. The centre-forward struck 20 goals overall for the season as Wolfsburg finished seventh on the table.

PEC coach Stegeman played with Weghorst at Heracles and is well aware of the rumours about Arsenal - and admits he's not surprised.

"He is not finished yet. His hunger has not yet been satisfied," Stegeman told Voetbal International via Voetbalzone.

“He always absorbs the level at which he plays. I think that is very clever. Emmen, Heracles. Again the best player at AZ. Then onto Wolfsburg. He always acquaints himself with the level at which he plays. That is an important characteristic for him as a player."

Indeed, Stegeman believes could even shoot for higher than the Gunners.

He added: “I would therefore like to see him at a top club like Bayern Munich. I don't know if he is a striker for that level, but maybe he will surprise us?"
