Matty Pattison is urging Newcastle United to hand Andy Carroll a new deal.

Pattison - who now works as an academy coach at Gateshead FC - reckons his former team-mate's displays so far merit a contract extension.

He told ChronicleLive: "When he has played he's been very effective. He hasn't scored goals and he hasn't played a lot, but when he does they seem to get results.

"He seems to have matured a hell of a lot, and certainly looks one of the senior players.

"You probably would have liked to have seen it a bit more often, but they seem to get solid results when they play him as a lone striker."
